JACK RABID - THE BIG TAKEOVER
OK, this cements it; I love Nushu. The kick ass L.A. glamour girl duo of Lisa Mychols and Hillary Burton already sounded like they had more fun than humans can stand on 2010’s Hula, playing nearly the whole record themselves, and melding Girl Group sounds with breezy, exciting early’80s Angelino power-pop. Now they apply that treatment to five covers that possess equal charm. Opposite gender, they wink at the prurient teen fantasies of the only Knack song I ever liked, 1979 #11 “Good Girls Don’t.” (Too bad this wasn’t the #1 smash, not “My Sharona!”) The superb taste continues on The Housemartins’ 1986 U.K. #3 “Happy Hour,” Phil Seymour’s 1981 #22 power-pop touchstone “Precious to Me,” Kirsty MacColl’s 1979 Stiff single “They Don’t Know” (a 1983 #8 for Tracy Ullman), and The Cars’ 1978 #35 “My Best Friend’s Girl”—all with their “dreamy” harmonies. Yowsa! (nushumusic.com)
